September Meeting Recap: A Conversation with Seattle Public Schools Superintendent Ben Shuldiner

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our September 15 community meeting! We were delighted to see such a strong turnout of Magnolia neighbors for a conversation with Seattle Public Schools Superintendent Ben Shuldiner.

Superintendent Shuldiner shared his perspective on the district's strengths, challenges, and priorities, followed by questions from the community.

A few highlights from the conversation:

  • Academic achievement and equity: Shuldiner noted that Seattle performs well academically compared with other large urban school districts, but emphasized the need to address significant disparities in outcomes among student groups.

  • Classroom instruction: He discussed strengthening academic rigor, ensuring students receive consistent instruction in core subjects, and better supporting individual classrooms and teachers.

  • School funding and potential consolidations: Addressing the district's financial challenges, he said all options must remain under consideration, including possible school mergers. He emphasized that any such proposals should involve principals, staff, and families before reaching the School Board.

  • Magnolia's growing population: Responding to questions about Fort Lawton redevelopment, the Albertsons site, and proposed zoning changes, he discussed how the district coordinates with the City to anticipate future enrollment needs.

  • School facilities: He acknowledged the need to devote more attention to maintenance and improvements at existing schools, including concerns raised about McClure, Blaine, and Lawton.

  • Community involvement: He encouraged residents to support local schools through volunteering, tutoring, and mentoring, and discussed efforts to make the district's volunteer process easier.

The meeting also included updates from Seattle City Council Districts 6 and 7 and discussion of ongoing MCC neighborhood priorities.
