Community Perspectives on Immigration, Schools, and Local Response

At the March meeting of the Magnolia Community Council, we continued last month’s community conversation about recent immigration enforcement activity and how it is affecting families, schools, and communities across Seattle.

We were grateful to hear from three speakers who shared perspectives from education, faith communities, and local government:

Seattle School Board Director Kathleen Smith
Pastor Marci Scott-Weis of Magnolia United Church of Christ
King County Councilmember Jorge Barón

Each speaker helped provide context, information, and resources for Magnolia residents as our community works to understand and respond to these evolving issues.

Key Takeaways from the Discussion

Schools and Student Support

Seattle School Board Director Kathleen Smith shared updates on how Seattle Public Schools is responding to concerns related to immigration enforcement and how the district is working to support students and families.

Key points included:

• Seattle Public Schools is focused on maintaining safe and supportive learning environments for all students, regardless of background or immigration status.
• District staff have received guidance on how to respond if immigration enforcement activity occurs near schools, with an emphasis on protecting student privacy and following established protocols.
• Schools are working to ensure families have access to accurate information and trusted community resources.
• Director Smith emphasized the importance of clear communication with families and community partners during times of uncertainty so students can continue to feel safe and supported at school.

She also encouraged community members to stay engaged with schools and school leadership as policies and guidance continue to evolve.

Community Support and the Importance of Knowing Your Neighbors

Pastor Marci Scott-Weis of Magnolia United Church of Christ shared reflections from her time in Minnesota, where communities have also experienced immigration related challenges.

She spoke about the importance of knowing and supporting our neighbors, especially during times of uncertainty. Strong communities, she noted, are built through everyday relationships, checking in with one another, sharing information, and making sure people feel seen and supported.

Pastor Marci shared examples of how faith communities and local organizations have worked together to:

• Provide support to families navigating difficult circumstances
• Create spaces where people can ask questions and receive reliable information
• Help neighbors better understand how to respond with compassion and awareness

Her message emphasized that community connection and awareness are powerful tools in helping neighborhoods navigate complex issues together.

King County Actions and Resources

King County Councilmember Jorge Barón discussed proactive steps King County is taking to respond to immigration concerns and support residents across the region.

Key points included:

• King County is continuing to review policies and programs intended to support immigrant communities and protect access to essential services.
• The County is working with community organizations to ensure residents can find accurate information, legal resources, and support services when needed.
• Councilmember Barón emphasized the importance of local governments providing clear information and maintaining trust with communities during periods of uncertainty.

He also took questions from Magnolia residents and shared insight into how county leaders are approaching these issues moving forward.
