Speak up for the Discovery Park Environmental Learning Center!
Last fall the Mayor proposed, and the Seattle City Council passed, a budget eliminating all of the Environmental Education positions in the chart to the right, except the one in the green box. Now, after hearing so much public outcry, he has proposed restoring the positions noted in blue, funding them in the Families, Education, Preschool, and Promise Levy (FEPP Levey). The intent, as understood, is to keep the portion of the program that supports school field trips and runs the Seattle Urban Nature Guides who lead them. However, there has been NO action of restoring the operation of the Environmental Learning Centers (ELC) or funding the position to run the Visitor Center, manage accessibility to the beach, or partnering with ARC for Nature Kids Preschool, etc. (see below, and org chart also).
Actions you can take NOW! There is a City Council Public Comment Session on the FEPP levy on Monday May 12th at 5:00pm.
You can participate in person, online, or submit written comments. If you wish to speak, you’ll have two minutes and you need to sign-up by at least 4:45 Monday. Follow the links below for more information.
