Embracing Our Two Districts

Time to call it...

Dear Magnolia Neighbors,

It is with some frustration and sadness that MCC has made the difficult decision to no longer pursue an appeal to the Seattle Redistricting Commission's final map that cracks Magnolia into two City Council Districts. Our community responded to our call for fundraising and involvement heroically. Unfortunately after meeting with several attorneys, their costs will be prohibitive for us to pursue an appeal. The compressed timeline for a review added to the challenge.

Post Game Highlights

While this is not the outcome we had hoped for, there are positive take-always from working through this redistricting process.

  • As a community, Magnolia by far had the greatest number of public comments submitted with the Commission, we collected over 1k signatures on our petition and conversations about redistricting could be heard all over Magnolia the past few months. Our community came together, we educated ourselves and spoke up when it was important.

  • MCC put out a request to fundraise for a possible appeal. In about a week, we collected over $10k in donations, thank you Magnolia, this is tremendous. Since we will not move forward with the appeal, we are working through the process to return all PayPal donations and checks.

  • MCC worked closely with our friends at the Magnolia Chamber of Commerce and completed much of the leg work for the basis of our appeal. We learned a lot from this process, and truly appreciated our collaboration with the Chamber. If any members of our community are interested in pursuing the appeal independently, please reach out to us, we are happy to discuss the work we have done so far.

Gearing Up for Next Season

Well...we can't quite wait another season with so many upcoming community issues, so here is where we go from here.

  • The new map and Council Districts will be put in place after the 2023 election. MCC will start planning for how we will come together to work effectively and efficiently for one community made up of two Council Districts.

  • There are no shortage of community issues MCC is working on and will continue to focus on over the upcoming months including... Light Rail Expansion, the Magnolia Bridge, Ursula Judkins Park, to name a few.

  • If there is a Community Issue you'd like to share with MCC, please send it our way.

  • Stay in touch with us! We are excited to share our newly redesigned MCC website and watch for our regular newsletters and social media posts on Facebook and new Instagram page.

Thank you again Magnolia, we have shown that standing together is important to us and this will serve us well as we continue to support this community we love.

Sending best wishes for a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday,
Your Magnolia Community Council
